09.26.2005 - what grinds my gears: you guys ever have shower knob problems where after you take a shower, the knob that you pull to make the water come outta the showerhead instead of below doesn't come down. and when the next time you take a shower, you forget to check, and you turn on the water, and freezing water comes outta the shower head? and that's what grinds my gears. so i was looking up info on saladin, the guy who took jerusalem back from the crusaders in the movie kingdom of heaven cause i wanted to know what % of it was real. Then Raynald looted a caravan of pilgrims on the Hajj in 1185, forcing Saladin's response. In July of 1187, Saladin invaded the Kingdom of Jerusalem and annihilated the Crusader army at the Battle of Hattin, a major disaster for the Crusaders and a turning point in the history of the Crusades. Saladin captured Raynald and had him executed; he also captured the King, Guy of Lusignan. He then recaptured Jerusalem on October 2, 1187, after 88 years of Crusader rule (see Siege of Jerusalem). then you should read the battle of jerusalem, and notice all the discrepancies, but what was interesting was: Negotiations were carried out between Saladin and Balian, through the mediation of the Yusuf Batit, one of the Eastern Orthodox clergy, who had been largely suppressed under Latin Christian rule and knew that they would have more freedoms if the city were returned to the Muslims. Saladin preferred to take the city without bloodshed, but those inside refused to leave their holy city, vowing to destroy it in a fight to the death rather than see it handed over peacefully.
