if you've haven't noticed, aim has been testing out a new type of ad recently. ADs w/ AUDIO! AOL Tests TV Ads in AIM. the 1st time i heard it, it scared the shit outta me. 1st of all, my aim ads are hidden (thanks to dead aim). 2nd of all, it plays outta the blue, just randomly, even when your watching a movie, or just browsing the web. at first i had no idea these ads were from aim. i thought a virus was in my computer or some webpage was playing. but closing every firebird window i had (mozilla firebird ~ internet explorer for those who still live in the stone age), the audio was still playing. it wasnt until jhs imed me today that i realized it was from aim and i decided to find out how to stop it. instructions have been taken from aim 5.2.3292 spyware and deadaim 4.1 If you want this to stop, follow these instructions:

  1. Close AIM (yes that means you'll be temporarily unable to chat with your buddies)
  2. Goto C:\Program Files\ and delete the folder AOD (most spyware programs already detect this so you might not have it anymore)
  3. Goto C:\Program Files\AIM95\Sysfiles and delete viewpoint.exe and AolOnDesktop.exe (viewpoint is the program that actually plays the audio, i don't really know what AolOnDesktop is, but it sounds gay, so delete it) (some of u may not see the .exe extension, don't worry, it's the same file)
  4. Goto Start->Control Panel->Add or Remove Programs and remove Viewpoint Media Player
  5. *UPDATED* Open "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" in notepad and append the following lines:
    127.0.0.1       ads.web.aol.com
    127.0.0.1       ar.atwola.com
    127.0.0.1       aim-charts.pf.aol.com
    127.0.0.1       VTOT.proxy.aol.com
    127.0.0.1       ads.aol.com
    127.0.0.1       www.empiremovies.com
    127.0.0.1       xlonhcld.xlontech.net

What this does is when aim tries to access its ad server: ads.web.aol.com, Windows will now redirect it to 127.0.0.1 (which is basically your own computer) hence hindering it from downloading any ads and audio. don't worry, aim will still work fine since regular aim goes through: login.oscar.aol.com
  6. Restart AIM (finally!!!)

that should be enought to fix it. hope this works! (^_^x)
